In thy tender compassion and mercy, calm the oppressors fury, their rage, their hate and stop the fear, suffering and brutal death inflicted on God's precious people in the middle east, in Russia, in the Ukraine, and all around the world. The oppressors are unashamed in the face of your Son and our God and they don’t realize the grievous indictments they place on their souls.
31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.
PERPLEXED?
While man incessantly seeks to acquire not only knowledge but all temporal things, the saint tells us to become completely empty even of ourselves.

✢ Saint Dionysios
is numbered among the Seventy Lesser Apostles. This wonderful man was the scion of a distinguished pagan family in Athens. Having completed the school of philosophy in Athens, he went to Egypt to study further. While he was there the Lord Christ died on the Cross, the sun was darkened, and there was darkness in Egypt for three hours. Then Dionysios cried out: ''Either God the Creator of the world is suffering, or this world is coming to an end.'' Returning to Athens, he married a woman named Damaris and had sons by her. He became a member of the highest court among the Greeks, the Areopagus, and thereafter he was known as the ''Areopagite.''When the Apostle Paul preached the Gospel in Athens, Dionysios was baptized with his entire household. Paul consecrated him Bishop of Athens. He left his wife, children and his position for the love of Christ. He traveled with Paul for a long time and met all the other apostles of Christ. He traveled to Jerusalem especially to see the Most-holy Theotokos ❋, and described his encounter with her in one of his written works. He was present at the burial of the Holy and Most-pure One. When his teacher, St. Paul, suffered martyrdom, Dionysios also desired such a death for himself, and went to Gaul, with his presbyter Rusticus and the deacon Eleutherius, to preach the Gospel among the barbarians. He suffered much but also succeeded much. By his labors many pagans were converted to the Christian Faith. Dionysios built a small church in Paris, where he celebrated the divine services.

When he was ninety years old, he, Rusticus and Eleutherius were seized and tortured for Christ; then all three were beheaded. The severed head of St. Dionysios rolled a long distance, to the feet of Catula, a Christian, who honorably buried it with his body. Dionysios suffered during the reign of Domitian in the year 96. He wrote several famous works: on the Divine Names of God, on the Celestial and Ecclesiastical Hierarchies, on Mystical Theology, and on the Most-holy Theotokos.
❋During the lifetime of the Mother of God, Saint Dionysios had journeyed from Athens to Jerusalem to meet Her. He wrote to his teacher the Apostle Paul: “I witness by God, that besides the very God Himself, there is nothing else filled with such divine power and grace. No one can fully comprehend what I saw. I confess before God: when I was with John, who shone among the Apostles like the sun in the sky, when I was brought before the countenance of the Most Holy Virgin, I experienced an inexpressible sensation. Before me gleamed a sort of divine radiance which transfixed my spirit. I perceived the fragrance of indescribable aromas and was filled with such delight that my very body became faint, and my spirit could hardly endure these signs and marks of eternal majesty and heavenly power. The grace from her overwhelmed my heart and shook my very spirit. If I did not have in mind your instruction, I should have mistaken Her for the very God. It is impossible to stand before greater blessedness than this which I beheld.”

The Holy Hieromartyr Dionysios the Areopagite
Glorious Saint Dionysios,
Wondrous theologian and lucid scribe!
His mind, gathered in his heart, he directed to God;
He witnessed heavenly mysteries and revealed them to us.
He perceived the glory of the heavenly orders
And described the hierarchy of heaven:
Principalities, Dominions, Virtues, Powers,
Wondrous Thrones, Seraphim,
Cherubim and Archangels,
Golden-winged Angels of God,
And the Mother of God.-
He beheld all with fear,
And also that which shines above the dust of the earth:
Heavenly powers of infinite strength,
Immortal suns and stars most brilliant!
All that he witnessed, Dionysios made clear
And told to the Church.
Thus he adorned and enriched the Church,
And his accomplishments were made golden
By his bloody death for his Christ.
Now he shines in heaven;
And the angelic hosts, blazing with the glory of God,
Call Dionysios “Brother.”
COUNSELS ON PRAYER

• Do not let a day pass without prayer; and your prayer should not be without tears.
• Persevere in and increase your prayer. Say the prayers that our Church has prescribed: the Six Psalms, Small Compline, the Paraklesis, etc. Read them from prayer books, but now and then leave the books aside for a while. That is, without the book, apart from the words of prayer written there, speak to Christ on your own. Simply, and from the heart, speak to Him as though you were seeing Him before you: “My Father, I have sinned; I did not spend my day in a spiritual way, but with worldly things. I judged, spoke a lot, laughed inappropriately, ate a lot, did not pray. I had so many weaknesses and falls. Forgive me, Lord,” and so on. Speak that way and Christ will take pity on you and send you tears. And tears have to come, because such prayerful tears will give you strength and joy. They will take away your sorrows.
• Just as when you do not work, you do not get paid, so without toil, effort, diligence, prayer, etc., neither spiritual gifts nor a taste for holy and spiritual things come.
• Humility, tears, prayer, and a pure soul. Tears do not come when one has not spent his day well, in a spiritual manner.
• If a day has passed during which you do not sense Christ in your heart by means of prayer, reading of the Psalter and the Gospel, etc., consider such a day to be a waste! Beg with tears, like Mary Magdalene, saying: “Do not abandon me, O my Christ! Do not leave me alone, O my Christ! My sweetest Christ, do not take my soul before I become all Thine!” With each prayer, you must shed one teardrop. And when you are filled with compunction, do not tell it to anyone, because it is a Divine gift and you might lose it!
