Saturday Oct 6/19 ns 2024 • Holy Apostle Thomas of the Twelve • Saint: I Cor. 4:9-16; St. John 20:19-31- SPIRITUAL FATHER by Saint Anthony of Optina (anon) WOULDN'T YOU AGREE? WHY READ THE PARAGON,

HOLY APOSTLE THOMAS
OF THE TWELVE

Through Thomas's doubt in the Resurrection of Christ the Lord, a new proof was given of that wonderful and saving event. The resurrected Lord appeared to His disciples a second time, in order to convince Thomas. The Lord said to Thomas: Reach hither thy finger, and behold My hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into My side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas replied:
My Lord and my God (St.John 20:27-28).

After the descent of the Holy Spirit, when the apostles cast lots to see where they would each go to preach, the lot fell to Thomas to go to India. He was a little saddened that he had to go so far away, but the Lord appeared to him and encouraged him. In India, St. Thomas converted many, both aristocrats and poor, to the Christian Faith, and established the Church there, appointing priests and bishops. Among others, Thomas converted two sisters to the Faith-Tertiana and Migdonia-both wives of Indian princes. Because of their faith, both sisters were ill-treated by their husbands, with whom they no longer wanted to live after their baptism. Eventually, they were allowed to go. Being freed of marriage, they lived God-pleasing lives until their repose.

More honorable than Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, thee who without corruption gavest birth to God the Word, the very Theotokos, thee do we magnify.

1 Corinthians 4:9-16 KJV

9 For I think that God hath set forth us the apostles last, as it were appointed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men.

10 We are fools for Christ's sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised.

11 Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace;

12 And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it:

13 Being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day.

14 I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you.

15 For though ye have ten thousand instructers in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.

16 Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me.

Saint John 20:19-31 KJV

19 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.*

20 And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.

21 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.

22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:

23 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.

24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.

25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.

26 And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.

27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.

28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

29 Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:

31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

Peace be unto you - Islam adopted it as a default greeting and all Muslims, regardless of nationality, much say it in Arabic:  Salaam alaykum - the response is -  w'alaykum alsalaam (and may peace be upon you)

Living Without Hypocrisy
Spiritual Counsels of the Holy Elders of Optina

SPIRITUAL FATHER
Saint Anthony of Optina

If someone, relying on his own understanding, thinks that he has no need of a guide, he very quickly will stray from the correct path. Therefore, we must implore the Lord God with tears that He grant to us a wise instructor; owing to the seriousness of our malady, a physician who is experienced and skillful is needed. Therefore, the one who is ill must seek not so much a large and peaceful hospital, as he should a skillful physician.

Fathers are not fathers only when they pat their children on the head and pamper them, but they are also called fathers when they instruct and punish the child.

Like medical physicians, spiritual physicians do not all act in the same way. Some will allow the patient to eat and drink everything, while others will order them to keep to a strict diet. It is similar with spiritual fathers; there are those who absolve and forgive everything, while there are others who will interrogate you and who will impose a penance on you for everything; but the aim of them all is the same:
to heal you.

A spiritual father, like a sign-post, merely indicates the way, but you yourself must follow the path. If the spiritual father points the way, but his disciple does not move, and will not go anywhere, then he will simply rot at that sign-post.

WOULDN'T YOU AGREE?
The temporary life we have was given to us by God, so it isn't that hard to give it back to Him, as He expects, in exchange for Life Eternal; once we are honestly love Him with all our heart.

WHY THE PARAGON Many are called but few are chosen because identification (wedding garment) is required but available to all.

St. Matt. 22:12-14 KJV And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.

13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness* , there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

The Holy Orthodox fathers and mothers consider it essential that preparation be made to create a spiritual climate for the mind and the heart. before initiating daily prayer. This may be accomplished by reading the Holy Scripture and the lives and writings of the saints, again, before the commencement of prayer.

The Paragon was created to facilitate access. This is especially helpful when one must arrive early at work and wish to begin with the blessing of the Holy Trinity, the Most Holy Immaculate Virgin, and the saints throughout the day.

And there’s more. All the writings, whether epistles, gospels, homilies or simple quotes, all navigate with love the aspirant in various ways to the same source - Eternal Life - Paradise.  If that is your objective, then a firm commitment will expedite your journey and exponentially increase rewards (the essential wedding garment and more) along the way.  Glory to God!
