Thursday Oct 4/17 ns 2024 • St. Hierótheos the Hieromartyr, Bishop of Athens • Eph. 4:14-17; St. Luke 7:17-30 - REFLECTONS ON DETACHMENT Abba Zosimas - WHY THE PARAGON (updated)

St. Hierótheos the Hieromartyr,
Bishop of Athens

Hierotheos was a companion of St. Dionysius the Areopagite and received the Christian Faith from the Apostle Paul a short time after Dionysius did. Later, the Apostle appointed him bishop of Athens. At the time of the Dormition of the Most-holy Theotokos, Hierotheus arrived in Jerusalem and took part in her burial. With his divine chanting he inspired heartfelt worship in many, revealing himself as a man inspired from on high. He labored much in the work of evangelism, converted many pagans to the truth and governed well his rational flock. He finally died a martyr for Christ, Who granted him a twofold crown in His Heavenly Kingdom: the crown of a hierarch and the crown of a martyr.

Ephesians 4:14-17 KJV

14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,

Saint Luke 7:17-30 KJV
17 And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.

18 And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things.

19 And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

20 When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.

22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.

23 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

24 And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

25 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts.

26 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.

27 This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

28 For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.

30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

REFLECTONS
ON DETACHMENT
Abba Zosimas
Monk of the Palestinian Desert

When he began, the blessed Abba Zosimas spoke in the following manner. First, he would sign himself with the precious cross over his mouth. He would say that, when the divine Word became human, He granted abundant grace to those who believed and who still believe in Him. For, it is possible to believe even now, indeed even to begin from this day, if we so desire. After all, our desire depends on our free will, with the cooperation also of grace. Thus, it is possible for whoever so desires, to regard the whole world as being nothing.

Moreover, he would take whatever he could find--whether a nail or some thread, or anything else of insignificant value--and say: “Who would ever fight or argue over this; or else, who would keep a grudge or be afflicted over this? Unless it be someone who has truly lost his mind. Therefore, a person of God, who is progressing and advancing, should consider the whole world as this nail, even if that person actually possesses the entire world. For, as I always like to say: ‘It is not possessing something that is harmful, but being attached to it.’

Who is ignorant of the fact that the human body is more precious than anything else that we may have? Then, how is it that, when circumstances demand, we are ordered to despise it (St. Matt.18.8)? If this is what happens with the body, how much more so does it apply to external matters?

Just as it is not appropriate to disregard material things unnecessarily, for no reason at all, it is also not proper to throw oneself before death. For, this would be foolishness. Rather, we are called to await the appropriate time, in order that we may be prepared.

WHY THE PARAGON Many are called but few are chosen because identification (wedding garment) is required but available to all.

St. Matt. 22:12-14 KJV And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.

13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness* , there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

The Holy Orthodox fathers and mothers consider it essential that preparation be made to create a spiritual climate for the mind and the heart. before initiating daily prayer. This may be accomplished by reading the Holy Scripture and the lives and writings of the saints, again, before the commencement of prayer.

The Paragon was created to facilitate access. This is especially helpful when one must arrive early at work and wish to begin with the blessing of the Holy Trinity, the Most Holy Immaculate Virgin, and the saints throughout the day.

And there’s more. All the writings, whether epistles, gospels, homilies or simple quotes, all navigate with love the aspirant in various ways to the same source - Eternal Life - Paradise.  If that is your objective, then a firm commitment will expedite your journey and exponentially increase rewards (the essential wedding garment and more) along the way.  Glory to God!
